How We Train

We will not force, coerce or scare your dog into learning. Pain is not a learning tool. No choke, prong, shock or e-collars are allowed.
We use only scientific methods, pairing classical and operant conditioning to help your dog learn and retain information. For years in zoos and aquariums and research facilities learning theory has been used to train new/more desirable behaviors. We use those same methods to help you and your pet learn new behaviors and enhance your relationship. These methods are not only effective but they are humane and fun! We can use them to create new behaviors, modify existing behaviors, or stop unwanted/annoying behaviors. We work with your dogs psychology, using extensive knowledge of the way they think and experience the world. The best part about this method of training is the great relationship you will have with your dog when you are done. They will trust you and you will trust them!

We use a marker for behavior, in most cases A CLICKER. In some cases a light or a whistle. The clicker isn’t a magic wand, it is simply a signal that tells your dog that they made the right choice. Since dogs don't speak english, the clicker or other marker bridges the language barrier. Your dog will learn faster and more completely with a marker signal that isn't your voice. And your timing is much better with a clicker or whistle then it is with a word. It is also always the same; it doesn’t change if you have a cold or have a bad day.

We use rewards. We pair the marker with something that your dog finds rewarding. In most cases this is FOOD. In some cases this is a toy or playing. When you are working, you expect a paycheck, so does your dog. Because your treat is paired with the clicker, you won't need to have food with you forever and for every behavior. This method allows you to train a behavior completely, then drop the clicker and treats while retaining the behavior.

We will not force, coerce, or scare your dog into learning. Pain and fear are not ethical learning tools. No choke, prong, or shock collars are allowed in class. We are glad to explain why that is the case, but it is not a negotiable issue for us. If you would like to use these items for training, we wish you the best of luck.
